Dan's DevLog - April 2026

Hey everyone! I've done a lot of cool stuff since the last DevLog. Here's some of it:

My Next Game

In case you missed it, I announced my next game: What's the Password?

It's a minimalistic puzzle game where you decode 4-digit passwords. I've had a lot of fun making it and it's almost ready to be shared with all of you. I can't wait!

All 109 of the puzzles in the game are finished, and I've been posting screenshots of them on my Bluesky account for Screenshot Saturday. Take a look if you'd like a preview of what to expect in the game.

MAGFest

I showcased Luck be a Landlord and Maze Mice at MAGFest 2026 as part of the MAGFest Indie Video Games Showcase (MIVS). I'd only ever showcased at PopCon Indy before this, which you can read about here:

My First Convention Booth - Postmortem
I showcased my game, Luck be a Landlord, at PopCon Indy last weekend! Was it worth it? Let’s crunch some numbers and find out! The Money One-time Expenses These are expenses that I have no way of re-using for future events. For example, the cost of electricity at the convention

I stand by everything I wrote in that article. Especially that you don't showcase at a convention to make money, you do it for the experience. I definitely didn't make back the money I spent showcasing my games at MAGFest, but the experience was extremely worth it. Shoutouts to all the volunteers helping to run MIVS, everyone who stopped by and played the games, and especially to Vin (the composer for both games) for helping me set up and operate the booth.

Me and @vincentcolavita.bsky.social are at @magfest.org! Stop by our booth to play Luck be a Landlord and Maze Mice! We're in the MAGFest Indie Video Game Showcase (MIVS) section.

Podcasts, Talks, and Interviews

People like hearing what I have to say apparently. That's weird! Here are some places that wanted me to say smart words:

Roguelike Celebration

I was invited to give a talk about Luck be a Landlord at the annual Roguelike Celebration. I was nervous about it, but I'm very happy with how it turned out! You can give it a watch here:

Dev Dive

I was interviewed by Tucker Hazell and Charlie Wacholz about the development of Luck be a Landlord:

I've watched a few other episodes of Dev Dive, and I definitely recommend the series.

Probably Designed

Harry Dean Hudson had myself and newobject (the developer of Ballionaire) on Probably Designed to discuss a lot of different topics. Here's an excerpt from our chat that I particularly enjoyed:

And here's the full podcast, in two parts:

This Week in Videogames

I was interviewed by Francisco Dominguez for an article by This Week in Videogames about gambling-themed roguelikes.

Balatro. Clover Pit. Raccoin. Gambling-themed roguelikes have been helping indie devs hit the jackpot in recent years. But what does the blurring line between gaming and gambling say about modern game design? We asked a bunch of experts, including the developer who arguably started the whole trend.

And that's all for now! Keep an eye out for some exciting announcements about my next game. Subscribing to this newsletter will make sure you don't miss any of them.

Until next time!
